Laugavegur/Landmannalaugar Trek, Iceland - Day by Day Account Next was the trek across the Inland Desert of Mælifellssandur. A 15 km walk across black lava sands that had virtually no altitude gain or loss. The isolation was great. Everyone could take a break and not feel swarmed by people. The landscape rolled on, soft underfoot, painting a beautiful scene. We had another stream crossing. This one was shallow enought that I braved it in gaiters. I am happy to report I was successful and it allowed me to perch on the other side of the river so I could get photographs of everyone as they traversed the icy obstacle. A rare photo op for myself with my wife Jennifer, Jon Gauti and "The Man" whose name I can't spell.
One of the amazing aspects of hiking in Iceland is the ability to carry very little water. The water everywhere is safe to drink. No filters or pills needed to make it safe. The story continues...
