Haute Route - Hiking From Gruben to St. Nicklaus to Gasenried

I got on the trail by 7:40 am after a quick hello and goodbye to a second group of British hikers. It was rainy, but not too bad. The directions out of town were great and the trail itself was solid. I made excellent time. The rain slowed to where the sky was sweating on me more than actually raining. I was content, given the forecast. There was absolutely nothing to see as the fog blocked everything. It was sad because the views were supposed to be spectacular. It was so bad, I placed my camera in my pack in disgust.

When I reached Jungu, while it was quaint, it was not “the loveliest Alp hamlet between Chamonix and Zermatt” as the book hyped it to be. Ideally, it would have been a good place to stop for the night and then walk from there to St. Nicklaus to Gasenried the next day. Having lost a lot of time I headed down to St. Nicklaus where I was to meet Jennifer. It was a far drop, but contained switchbacks most of the way down.
