3/18 On to Yak Kharka We were going to shoot up close to the pass, but instead decided to split the altitude gain over two days. We started with a day hike around Manang and then walked halfway up to the town before the pass. The day hike was a quick jump up to see the lake, glacier, mountain and town from up high. It was a pretty awesome view, but tainted because the lake was still frozen. After the day hike, we grabbed a quick bowl of soup and headed up to Yak Kharka. No news was good news, as we didn’t see any people coming down because the pass was closed. Unfortunately, I talked to at least five people who were coming down due to altitude problems. This solidified my theory that people’s acclimatization plans were askew. Interestingly, the guidebook doesn’t say their plan prevents altitude sickness. It only prevents death from altitude sickness. Nice distinction. As it turned out the first half of the climb to Yak Kharka strained me and I am not sure why. As we progressed the heat was brutal. I think that’s what may have affected me. The story continues...
