Gear Heads - GPS Although not usually essential, a GPS can greatly enhance your trek. In addition to tracking your progress along a map, they usually include an altimeter to allow you to gauge your progress along an ascent or descent. Be careful on your selection of a GPS since battery life varies greatly. The model I use gets 40 or more hours from two lithium AA batteries. This usually means I can have it on while I walk an entire two-week trek, only changing the batteries once. This is the model I use that can be purchased from REI.
