Gear Heads - Convertible Pants It’s rare that a multi-day hike doesn’t require some form of pants. Often temperatures vary greatly at different points on the trail. So, unless the trek is entirely alpine, convertible pants are a great way to save space. By unzipping the lower portion of the pant legs, your pants become a pair of shorts. It’s best to bring more than one pair, just in case you go butt-sliding down the side of a mountain. Of course, the mighty duct tape can help out in such situations. These are similar to the one's I wear and are availabel from REI. These are similar but for women: Return to Gear Heads
